"I've referred to "Ear On Arkansas" in some old posts and one of the Timeless Tracks has a discussion of Ear. Briefly, it was a weekly 30 minute saterical review of the news in Arkansas. This was one of the features that made KAAY unique and not just another music station. Over the years, many different individuals assumed the responsibility of putting the program together. As I listen to some of the Ear recordings, I realize how times have changed and things that were important...

" Continuing the history of Razorbackmania as promoted by KAAY. I need you help guys on the year this song was played. It's "The Pig" by the Pacers. J. Paul Scott wrote it and Bobby Crawford and the Pacers recorded it. Please email me the year and any other stories you may have connected with this record. Bobby and The Pacers still play dates today. As with all of the airchecks featured on this blog, it was recorded off the air and is presented here for educational purposes....

"If you listen to the newscasts that have been featured on this blog, you understand that times were trying just as they are now. At KAAY we were always looking for the bizarre, the ridiculous and satirizing all that we could. You have seen the "Ear On Arkansas" discussions. Later, I will feature some recordings from "ear". Today, I ran across a record that the oldies stations never play even though it reached number one. And several of his succeeding records also were...

"From the Timeless Tracks broadcast here is a discussion of The Blue Goose and more: The original Blue Goose was at 8th and Izard across the street from KTHV.KAAY, at that time was located on the 2nd floor of the Channel 11 building. Howard Watson, known as Ken Knight on KAAY started referring to the "elegantly appointed Blue Goose". He built on this illusion for the listeners by describing the LR elite arriving for the floor show.Night after night to 40 states and 19 foreign...

"Beaker Street Memories A few reminiscences. I grew up in Evanston IL, a northern suburb of Chicago. And while the big city rockers like WLS and WCFL provided no shortage of great listening, I was an active DX-er and was fascinated by that exotic station from Little Rock that boomed in every night on 1090. What really made KAAY unique was Beaker Street, which sounded like nothing else on AM in Chicago or anywhere else. In the early 70âs, album rock and âprogressive FMâ was on the air...

"At least it was good television. And the score was good through 3/4 of the game Arkansas fans are very frustrated. No longer is the entire state one big pep rally. The radio stations are just semi involved. It's been a long time since there was a Razorback record, er CD produced. In 1975 Tommy Riggs a/k/a Rock Robbins had left KAAY for Pine Bluff. He was Program Director and later Manager of KCLA. Pat Walsh needed a Razorback Record for the Cotton Bowl so he called Tommy to come up with a...

"I got a great email from Bob Steel who was the only Michael O'Sullivan KAAY ever had. As was Pat Walsh's custom as an inside joke, the actual Michael O'Sullivan was an accountant with Lin Boradcasting Corp. Along with some additional names, Bob sent a newscast with an exclusive interview with V.P. Spiro Agnew as he visited Little Rock. This is another great example of a real functioning radio news department. As you hear this great newscast you will probably be blown away with the...

"Return with us now...to Pres. Carter, snowstorm in LR and Pryor announces for Senator Perhaps the headline should be "Short clip of Ray Lincoln chatting with newsman Mike Mckenny". For many reasons this is a great audio sample to save. "A Great Way to Remember George! Relive one of his newcasts. This newscast comes from January 1964. The newscasts were still at :15 and :45 later changed to the top of the hour. This comes from a Sept. blog entry: Thanks to Mike McKinney a/k/a Jack Lee for several airchecks. This cut is a George J. Jennings newscast from Jan. 1964. "If KAAY were a music station today, it would probably be playing a song about Mitch Mustain. KAAY was always involved in Arkansas Razorback promotion. Many records, (45s with the big holes) had their beginnings at KAAY. In the era of payola, Pat Walsh wisely decided the station didn't need to be directly involved with the records. Also, if a Razorback song came from KAAY, other stations wouldn't play it. Enter J. Paul Scott. He wrote and produced may of the Razorback records on his labels...

"10:10am-11:20am. Telescoped, though a lot of music left in. KAAY promotes their big power on this aircheck a lot, like the increment-weather promo: 'our 50,000 watt signal will reach out in the increment weather and keep you appraised.' There's a promo for Beaker Street with Don Marcus and a sing-over jingle over the beginning of Olivia Newton-John's 'If not for you'. Note the spot for a Casio mini-calculator, which cost $19.95 back then! Newsguy is Mitch Michaels.'' ---Greg Barman...

I was going through some old tapes I had recorded & found this funny blooper from KLPQ, the FM sister of KAAY. The cart snarled during a song & a dash for another ensues on-air. The guy did a good job recovering, but I can't remember his name. Bet some of the readers will know. This is spring of 1981 if tape was marked correctly. Enjoy. Lance D. I received this email from Paul regarding "Beaker Street" The one thing I am curious about is the version of "House Of The Rising Sun" that was used. This opening theme was used since at least 1973, and the whole song was usually played. Unfortunately, when I recorded it, it was not, and as an 11 year old, I stopped the tape. I wonder if anyone recognizes this version of the song. The only other time I heard this version was on an episode of the old NBC "Weekend"...

Today is a very rare audio treat. It is a jock promo that features the voices of the original DJ's that started when KAAY went on the air. As many know, KAAY used a set of disc jockey names that seldom changed. The person may have changed several times, i.e. there were three Doc Holidays. Sometimes the names were retired. The next generation of names were usually an inside joke. Clyde Clifford of Beaker Street fame, was named after the corporate controller of LIN broadcasting. These names were...

One of the early promotional 45 record give-a-ways at the Mighty Ten Ninety was "The Big KAAY Twist". Originally it was a jingle produced in Nashville. The full version on the record runs 1:30. As good as any of the twist records out at the time, the thousand or so pressings were quickly given away. This would be a great find if you could turn one up today. I have seen one go on Ebay for $30.00. You can have it free! Courtesy of A.J. Lindsey

Ron Owens a/k/a Walt Sadler: Walt came to KAAY from Louisiana at the recomendation of Ray Brown who was then the 3rd Doc Holiday. Walt took the name "Ron Owens" and I believe he was the second. He did D.J. work, news, remotes and anything he was asked to do making friends everywhere. Walt worked as sales manager at KOKY, and news at KLRA. He was back at KAAY (religious format) when he passed away a few years ago. Here is an air check from the 11/20/69. Courtesy A.J. Lindsey
